Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /tý.ba.ris/, /ˈty.βa.ris/, /ˈti.va.ris/, /tý.ba.ris/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ˈty.ba.ris/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ˈty.βa.ris/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ˈty.va.ris/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ˈti.va.ris/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Unexplained. Neumann argues against a connection with the toponym Σύβαρις (Súbaris) and instead, hesitantly, proposes to connect the word with Luwian [script needed] (tuwarsa, “vine”), whence also θύρσος (thúrsos, “thyrsus”). However, Furnée remains sceptical.
